Sagamore Hotel The pioneer "Sagamore Hotel" of the late years called the Central Hotel, made way for progress Tuesday when a bulldozer bulled it to the ground, ending nearly 70 years of an era. Record Courier picture shows the central as it appeared from courthouse block immediately before wrecking crew took over. Pioneer hotel had veranda porches on three floors clear around the structure. (photo one) These were removed prior to recent years when imitation brick siding was applied. Cupolas and dormers were same as originally built, however. Ground will be paved for use of Chaves Super Market as parking facility. Record Courier, used with permission |

A convenient stopping place for railroad travelers near the turn of the century was the Crabill Hotel, at what is now the northwest corner of Broadway and 10th Streets. Across the street was the Columbia Hotel. The area around the hotels was known as "The Waterfront" because of the nocturnal activity in the area. The builder of the hotel Louis Crabill, was a member of the City Council in 1880s and 1890s. |
