Columbia County, Oregon USGenWeb Q200001.txt ========================================================= Subject: Gaumond/Gormon Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2000 12:49:41 -0800 From: Tye & Gloria Atwater To: bartom@columbia-center.org Dear Noel & Barbara Thompson, For over a year I have been trying to research the GAUMOND family, also spelled as GORMAN, who were in Columbia County. They had a son born in Houlton, now part of St. Helens, on 27 January 1928. Part of the confusion is a variation in name spellings and changes. On his 1944 SS application, the son spells his name as Loren Louis GORMAN, and his parents as Parmelia M. JUILMETTE and Louis L. GORMAN. In 1965, he spells his name as Loriene Louis GAUMOND, with parents Pormelia GUILMETTE and Louis GAUMOND In 1987, he is again Loriene Louis GAUMOND, with his mother as Parmelia M. Guilmotte, and his father still as Louis J. Gaumond. Last in 1990, he continues as Loriene Louis GAUMOND, with mother Parmelia Guilmette, but his father as Louis J. GORMAN. What I would like to know is, do you have any records which may help sort this out? Do you have any marriage record for his parents? Do his parents appear in any cemetery or death records for Columbia County? If you can find such records, I would want to locate obituaries for his parents. I am curious as to whether they had any more children, and where they were from. If there is a fee for this research, just tell me how much. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, Tye Atwater ============================================================== Subject: Re: Gaumond/Gormon Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 22:04:56 -0800 From: Noel Thompson To: Tye & Gloria Atwater Dear Tye & Gloria--ALWAYS when we get queries we wonder where you are? This is an interesting one you sent. We were with a group of 20 friends at local Pizzeria this evening, and at least 12 of the group were acquainted with your Gorman family. Loren was known as "Red" or "Frenchie" in high school, graduating in 1946. Wonder if he went into the service?? Louis and Parmelia were owners of the "Basket Grocery" in Houlton (now St Helens). It was right next to the theater, and a good place to buy snacks. Lorin was in high school the same year as some of us, a year ahead of me. He was not at the class 50th reunion in 1996, but it was not mentioned that he was deceased at that time. He's remembered as being a "little strange", maybe because he was such a fantastic piano player, and the top speed-typist in our classes. (envy??) The family had an extensive collection of 78's. Thoughts are that Lorin went into the music world in Portland, and maybe that's why the change in his name.... There was also a recollection that there was an older daughter in the family. No one remembered her being in school. Father: born 1869 died 1962, mother: born 1890 died 1963. (cem listing) I would like to know how much looking you want us to do -- the mortuary records might give more information, perhaps the next generation back. Obits should list children. Are you related to this family somehow? We don't want money for helping people. We'll wait for an answer from you before we go further. Yes, I am a relative. Russell Winnemore was a 1st cousin, 1st removed. His father Abram was my grand uncle. I am researching the Winnemore family name. The last I could find Russell was on the 1920 Florida census. I was in touch with his brother Harold a few years ago, but Harold did not keep in touch with Russell. >From your online cemetery listing, I found the cemetery listing on Russell. I thought that with an actual death date, I could possibly find an obituary. I was trying to see if Russell had a wife or any other family. Thanks for any information you might have. I'll send it to you in time (need your address) but first, let me read some of it: =======Russell Winnemore=======Month #11, Year #63==== Date of Death June 28 1980 Sex Male Color White Birthplace Illinois Date of birth MO unreadable DAY 8 Year 1911 Age 69 Years MO 5(?) L Moitt Nephew ============================================= TOM NOTE: THey dont show the WHOLE file to non-relatives, because they are warned about lawsuits over some kinds of info. But we looked thru a number of papers, since you are a relative, on which I can comment. Mr. Rushing [or was it Coleman]was Mort. operator AND ALSO EXECUTOR. This isn't allowed any more. The 4 page handwritten list of items sold exists, and I could perhaps get a copy for you if you want: Summary of the list, as I saw it: He had a LOT of tools, as in fixing cars and things. I think I saw a WELDER. He had 2 cars - the newest was 1979 model. Other was a junker. He had rifle & fish net. [IE he hunted and fished] He had 4 pages of stuff, including 3 tv sets, household stuff, Only real value was the newer car. I could not see any evidence of a wife or companion in the list. =========================== Merchant Seaman, with connections to Florida - does that suggest he came here by ship and decided to stay? We ARE in merchant ship territory. I cant be sure, but those dates must mean Born Jan 8 1911, died age 69, 5 months & 20 days I note it took 13 days to get permission from florida. Maybe no one knew who to ask? Can we guess? Funeral guy as executor. Does that imply either he had not enough cash to pay the funeral or funeral guy was a buddy of his? Other papers I didn't look at. ========== Next, I could go look in the newspaper repositories for Obit. But that may not help a lot, because the obits are often written from the Funeral info. Or maybe he was well known and there is a GOOD obit. ========== Notice that there are NO OTHERS OF THAT LAST NAME in my entire cemetery listing of 17,000 deaths over about 60 years in all of columbia county. IE he jumped ship without family. ================= I'm not being nosy. I'm just helping piece the picture together. My wife is a genealogist from way back. ====CHEERS=====TOM============= Ron & Kathie Groll wrote: > Hi Noel > Thanks for your fast reply. Yes, I am a relative. What fun to read. Of course I am interested in whatever copies you can furnish of anything. I will willingly pay copy costs and postage. Mrs. Kathie Groll 494 Pinehurst Drive Des Plaines, IL 60016-2051 Two questions comes to mind that you might have an answer for -Is there a gravestone on the site and who paid for it? I'm assuming that since the funeral home was executor, etc. whatever money realized from sale of items was used to pay for the funeral. Since he had no spouse, who could have applied for social security benefits and received them? At this point, I don't think looking for an obituary will serve any purpose. If there was one, I doubt it would have any new information. The nephew's name was a big help since Russell only had one sister and you may have given me her married name. Didn't think you were being nosy regarding the story. I'm finding it fascinating myself and just the things you sent me have filled in a few blanks. Thought you might be interested in the REST OF THE STORY. In 1996 I wrote to Russell's brother Harold who appears to have been quite a loner. Now i think his brother Russell may have also been one. Harold was in the merchant marines for over 50 years, so you can imagine my surprise to find that Russell was also a merchant marine. The 1920 Florida connection was the census when they were young and still living together as a family. As Harold wrote to me in a letter dated 1996 "Russell E. Winnemore born October 8, 1911 - He sure is my brother who I last saw in New Orleans at least about fifty years ago. I guess he never tried to keep in touch as I never heard from him" So two brothers, both in the merchant marine at the same time, but never ran into each other or kept in touch. Plus Harold didn't even know that Russell had died. I guess that is what genealogy stories are made of. I certainly congratulate you on the cemetery readings you have done and the fact they are available on the internet. Wonderful service. Looking forward to receiving copies of any paperwork you can supply. Some of it, I think you should call me at 503-397-2679 and we should talk. First: The records show where the stone would be. I've got the map in your folder here, and will send it when we send other things. Second: I looked in the Cemetery, and the stone is there, just as the records show. It is a nice, typical engraved stone embedded flat in concrete, as most are these days. It says "Russell Winnemore 1911-1980." Its in an easy to find spot, about 70 feet to the right along the first latteral road as you enter the cem, just after you cross the railroad tracks. Third: I talked with one person who was involved in the case. He didnt know Russell until he had died, but knows a few things we can talk about. Fourth: I'll probably get around to taking pictures of the stone - and then you have to wait until that roll of film gets filled up. Fifth: He was such a recluse that he died without anybody knowing it, at his recluse home. They broke in to find him after the neighbors noticed his dogs were getting thin from lack of food. Doesn't pay to not like anybody- then nobody can help you. Sixth: I think the description was "five miles up the road from Deer Island Store". It says Rt 2 Box 2181 on the certificate. But the fire departments put the county on a grid address system a while back. We went from R 4 box 121 (or something) to 33550 Blaha Road. So I would have to find someone who knew the translate tables for the addresses to find the place. I expect there is no point in finding it, though. Seventh: Yes, the Courts would have appointed the Cemetery guy to be executor. Cem guy did not know Russell. That Cem guy is not alive. Courts would have allowed the stone, would have audited the funds. Courts would have controlled disposition of the remainder. Eighth: well, I forgot what else..Enough, already. ==========Cheers=========TOM======================= Tomorrow Thursday there are 3 evening meetings, so you wont find me until after 9 PM. Might be here most of the day, though. ====================================== Ron & Kathie Groll wrote: > RE: Winnemore > Hi Tom- > Gosh, you have supplied more information than I thought imaginable. > What fun to read.
