Paint Your Wagon

In 1968 Paint your Wagon was filmed in the mountains east of Baker City.  A whole town was built there and later blown up at the end of the movie.

George Gildersleeve contributed the pictures and information

George had taken Conrad Allen (leaning on the right) with me. Conrad was John's dad and they had the farm/ranch that John Bootsma now has. Anyway, the director, Josh Logan on the left saw me with him and took my camera from my and had an aide take our picture with him. The other gentleman - serious now - was a real pleasant guy.

I was on the school board at the time so was able to use the gym which is now middle school on Broadway. Clint Eastwood, his driver who played basketball at UCLA, the third director and my team of Doug Humphress and another would play 3 on 3 basketball several times a week.

These were some of the standins and stuntmen - all horsemen. The guy on the left was Clint Eastwood's standin and stuntman. They were all down to earth gents. Eastwood's standin had his family with him as did many others. He took advantage of the location and packed into the Wallowa's on one or more occasions. (The buildings you see in the background are part of the city that was built for the movie)
