Lived in Southern Oregon 1854. Was engaged in Quartz mining. He fought in Rogue River Indian War of 1855-56. He moved to Sparta 1872 and operated a general Mercantile Store. 1874 he opened a mercantile store and banking business at the present site corner of Main and Court Street. The present store has been owned and operated by the Heilner family for 100 years. S. A. Heilner installed the first telephone system in Baker City.
