Do you know Kate TOP and Fred K NORDHOFF ? Please
look at this wonderful photo of them.
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Mr. & Mrs. Fred NORDHOFF which
was taken at the Perry & Son Studio in Sheldon, Iowa. The photograph
appears to have been taken in the late 1890's or early 1900's with
the couple likely in their late teens at the time it was taken. In
addition to their married names, someone has also written "Kate TOP"
on the back of the photograph suggesting that this was her maiden
name.
Based on limited research I was able to find Fred K. NOORDHOFF b.
18 Oct 1874 at Chicago, Illinois to parents Klaas Frederik NOORHOFF
and Grietje LUURTSEMA. Fred married Kate TOP about 1898 in Hospers,
IA. Kate TOP was born about 1877 in Hospers, IA. I was able to
locate Kate and her family in the 1880 census with records providing
the following information:
E. TOP, age 42, born in Holland, a Gardner, parents
born in Holland
Anna TOP, wife, age 28, born in IA, Keeps House, parents born in
Holland
Garret TOP, son, age 9, born in IA, at School
John TOP, son, age 7, born in IA, at School
Janey TOP, dau, age 6, born in IA, at School
Katie TOP, dau, age 4, born in IA
Henry WILEY, other, age 32, born in IN, Works at Brick Kiln,
parents born in Scotland
In 1870 Kate's parents were living in Summit, IA without any
children, records indicate the following:
Ebert TOP, age 33, born in Netherlands, a Farm Laborer
Aantje TOP, age 18, born in Netherlands, Keeping House
In the 1900 census I was able to locate Fred K.
NOORDHOFF living in Floyd, IA with records providing the following
info:
Fred K. NOORDHOFF, age 25, born Oct 1875, married 3 years, born in
IL, parents born in Netherlands, a Teacher
Kate NOORDHOFF, age 24, born Apr 1876, married 3 years, born in IA,
parents born Netherlands/IA
Luke NOORDHOFF, age 22, born Mar 1878, born in IL, parents born in
Netherlands, a Teacher
In the 1910 census Fred and Kate are living in North Milton, Oregon
with records providing the following information:
Fred K. NOORDHOFF, age 31, married 12 years, born in IL, parents
born in Holland, a Public School Teacher
Kathrine NOORDHOFF, wife, age 34, 0 children, born in IA, parents
born in Holland/IA
Eghbert TOP, father-in-law, age 72, married 40 years, born in
Holland, parents born in Holland
Anna TOP, mother-in-law, age 58, 4 children/4 living, born in
Holland, parents born in Holland
The couple remained in Milton, OR and was included in the 1920
census at that location:

Goods Merchant
Kathryn NOORDHOFF, wife, age 43, born in IA, parents born in
Holland/IA
Kathryn DEGERST, roomer, age 20, born in SD, parents born in IA
Fred's Father Klaas F. NOORDHOFF was located in the 1920 census
living in Orange City/Holland, IA with records providing the
following information:
Klaas F. NOORDHOFF, age 76, born in Holland, to USA 1872, parents
born in Holland
Gryntje NOORDHOFF, wife, age 68, born in Holland, to USA 1866,
parents born in Holland
Jennie NOORDHOFF, dau, age 37, born in IA, a Japanese Teacher
